Spore Newsletter and Date Change

Written on: April 25, 2008 by xDreamache

Two emails were sent out today.  One was from the EA Store noting that the release date for my creature creator pre-order has changed to June 17th (It was initially June 15th).  The second one was the Spore Newsletter basically touching on the two news postings beneath this one from last night.  In this newsletter, they link to an official press release, making the announcement of the creature creator.

One interesting paragraph from the press release is
“We are thrilled to finally be putting the creative tools of Spore into the hands of players around the world,” said Will Wright, chief designer, Maxis. “The amazing creations players design this summer will help populate the game universe we all enter when Spore ships this September, so in a sense, the Spore Creature Creator is the birth of Spore.”

Note the bolded part, "help populate the game universe". Some people were questioning as to why Spore would release part of the game beforehand and that was my response, it's a necessity. And then quite a few people were upset that they're charging for it.  One, they *are* offering a free version. Then most importantly, two, Maxis & EA are businesses.  They aren't out to feed the hungry children of the world, they aren't a charity organization.  The money they earn, at least a good portion of it, will go back into the game which is good for everyone.

If I ran a similar business and made the decisions about Spore, I'd charge $149.95 for the creature creator so be fortunate I'm not in charge. ;)

So quit the whining!

OMG you're a retard if you'd sell the DEMO for $150... although it is worth that much... oh well, anyways, I wouldn't complain about the quality of 150 but the price?... nuh-uh.

i agree with tino we should have another count down for the spore creature creator and the CC is the life of spore it starts with a couple of ideas and as you build your first creature you will get ideas for the next one and the next one and befor you know it you have a bunch of creatures that are amazying and yeah it does cost 10 bucks but oh well that is about 1 hour's pay its not like you cant get it lol so quit complaining and if ur not gunan buy it don't complain

You guys should add another countdown timer under the one at the top for the demo. I mean, it's less than two months away! That's an exciting countdown.

it would be nice if they would consider the creature editor a sort of "pre-purchase" of the full version of the game, but regardless I'm definately not complaining. I'm sure EA's spent tons of money developing this game. Time for a return on investments.

ye your right! Its not a demo though! do you people read!!! "Its liek the begining of SPORE!" It really is! you by the editor! create a creature, and then when the game comes out, wat ever, or how many creatures you made, you then im guessing download them into the real full game! this is just a heads up on help populating the game and universe!

18. Tino The Mexican - Apr 26, 2008 05:49 PM

Look at is this way: People who want to pay can begin populating the universe of Spore on June 17th. Those who just want to enter an already populated universe can buy in September.

killath, no, it's not like any other demo of a game. it's not even considered a demo. demos traditionally serve the purpose of previewing a game... this, is a necessary step in the game in order to ensure there's an abundance of creatures to populate a very big universe. yes, they do have creatures already made for offline play, but they obviously don't have the time to invest to create thousands of creatures, which is exactly what will happen by offering it a few months before the game.

david its a demo of the full game. like any other fricken demo for a game.

22. david619 - Apr 26, 2008 02:13 PM

do u need it to make a craeture

23. vetrijar - Apr 26, 2008 11:12 AM

Would have been nice if the creator creature sent to stores and downloadable version was also something more portable such as on pocket pcs and phones and etc. then you can have the game on your PC and then be at the airport or *cough* in class making the next creature on your phone with just the creator.

24. Dred13 - Apr 26, 2008 08:56 AM

Wait, my Katz will be in someones world when they start, dude that rocks ^^

25. GildedBear - Apr 25, 2008 09:17 PM

so, my thoughts on why EA/Maxis is doing the CC like they are. One, they want the Spore name in stores to generate more buz, that means boxes and disks, which cost money, hence $9.99 for the full version at retail. But then, the people who bought it in a store would be upset to learn that they could have downloaded the same thing for free, so they 'crippled' the downloadable one a bit. Keep in mind though, that it's only the parts that are limited (hopefully), so you can still explore the space of what's possible even though you won't have as many, for example, options on which feet to use.
