Gamasutra article

Written on: March 31, 2008 by Alterego

A writer of Gamasutra had a chance to try the Creature Creator at the  ICE Conference in Canada, and beyond his gameplay experiences, he also mentioned a new feature, "Spore Store", that is built into the game, he compared it to iTunes.
Basically it means that you will be able to buy additional creature parts, that will be made and added to the game only after the release, for a small fee (presumably 1 or 2$ for each new body part).

The rest of the article talks about the public opinion about Spore, and its possible success.

ShadowWolf - Apr 01, 2008 12:20 PM

yeah, and the spore site posted a correction, the only in-game stuff they will sell will be expansion packs.

Mulligan11 - Apr 01, 2008 08:06 AM

They updated the artice. Read it again. There's an apology at the bottom. Everybody take a deep breath and relax...

Lord Henry II - Mar 31, 2008 09:40 PM

I hope that the spore store will be sort of like how you will up date your game by bringing in the new features that the developers have thought up. Maybe what they mean about the spore store is that auto-updating thing that they were talking about in the videos and that you can pick and choise what new things you want to import into your game.

xShuffle - Mar 31, 2008 08:20 PM

Dont need to buy... check out Spore website

OmniRapeasor - Mar 31, 2008 08:20 PM

IT WAS A LIE GO TO Spore.com ''we do not have plans to sell individual parts via micro-transactions''. http://www.spore.com/press_033108.php

Hans the Great - Mar 31, 2008 07:15 PM

ah crappity crap!! Dan the idea to charge us for a game that charges us extra to play it to the fullest!

space eagle - Mar 31, 2008 06:28 PM

well i think unless they're really good parts i'll stick with the originals. my creatures will all be old compared to everyone else because the newer generations will be completely made of the bought parts and i'll be walking around with all the originals lol.

zef82 - Mar 31, 2008 06:12 PM

Boba, You can morph the already existing parts available, and get many different sizes from that part. If you look at the creatures in so many screenshots, many of them have the same type of mouth or hands, just bigger, smaller, fatter or thinner. You can't make new parts, the spore store will have new looking mouths and wings etc. to buy and morph.

spider22 - Mar 31, 2008 06:02 PM

I buyz zem all so i can be coolzer and have special partz!

spider22 - Mar 31, 2008 06:02 PM

Mortis Drakul Noctem - Mar 31, 2008 05:47 PM

Oh please, if all the faggot ass nerds out there can vomit 15$ a month to play as SexyGnome14 in WoW, then you guys can, if you want, pay 1$ for an extra Spore Part. The game will cost the same, and it will come with all the Pre-Discussed/Demonstrated Features. And Spore Sharing is FREE! These "Premium Parts" are just little extras, made by Maxis, that you can buy if you'd like to further customize SPORE. Stop being a bunch of whiny faggots!

Boba Fett - Mar 31, 2008 05:26 PM

@ Obsidian (aka W4S) - I've been watching every available video of Spore since '05. If you're telling me that you can't make your own stuff then that's just ignorant of all the creature editor videos showing the shaping and morphing of creatures.

xAzkanan - Mar 31, 2008 05:17 PM

...I am feeling..."angry" right now. This is outrageous! We wait for 3-5 years, taking delay after delay, bad news after bad news. The only good news we have ever had is further improvements to the game and a demo - "Improvements" being steps towards what the game should be like! OUT. RAGE. OUS. Everybody send hatemail spam to EA game ¬¬.

Rone - Mar 31, 2008 05:11 PM

Why is everybody making such a big deal out of a couple extra bucks for a couple extra parts? Besides, I'm sure the parts will be extremely awesome and worth a buck or two!

andrew655 - Mar 31, 2008 05:10 PM

lets not get all heated up about this... it could very well be a poor choice of words by the author of the article: "There is also a "Spore Store" built into the game, iTunes Store style. In addition to the asynchronously downloaded assets from other players, the store allows players to purchase additional creature parts (and presumably other things, for other editors) via micropayments." he may have very well misunderstood the concept of buying parts with dna points.... but we dont know for sure

Daguu - Mar 31, 2008 05:08 PM

What I wonder is, what if someone bought a new parts for their creatures and someone who didn't buy the parts wants to download that creature with the bought parts, what would happen? Will they not be able to download that creature because of those exclusive parts? This is all way too confusing. I think they should at least do something like the Wii Points or WoW time cards to add points to our Spore account that could be used for parts. I wouldn't mind that all that much.

xStaticwolf - Mar 31, 2008 05:01 PM

Wait, surely someone from xSpore could upload a new part and let everyone else Download it...?

thedollardonkey - Mar 31, 2008 04:49 PM

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

tiberiusgodfried - Mar 31, 2008 04:39 PM

If they release modding tools you might be able to make your own parts. But if they are doing the Spore store they might not.

ChupaDave - Mar 31, 2008 04:26 PM

Lucky bastard, he got to try out the editor. : P

Obsidian (aka W4S) - Mar 31, 2008 04:15 PM

First of all, Boba, you can't make new parts... =.= Second of all, this is just in case you get bored of spore's parts, (you heretic) you can just go buy more. And I highly doubt each part will cost $1, more like $3 for a certain theme.

andrew655 - Mar 31, 2008 04:09 PM

or maybe gamasutra actually made a mistake of some kind and misinterpreted the spore store system... maybe they meant pay with dna poitns or whatever...

andrew655 - Mar 31, 2008 04:08 PM

andrew655 - Mar 31, 2008 04:07 PM

who probably wont buy spore? I probably wont. major TURNOFF. Way to go EA. now spore fans can pay for the expansion packs, AND extra parts (because we know the basic game wont come with many cool ones)

sporekiller - Mar 31, 2008 04:02 PM

just dont buy parts lol i mean its just a addition doesnt mean you have to buy it..... im not

xAndy - Mar 31, 2008 03:50 PM

EPIC FAILS EA FAILS

Bluk0 - Mar 31, 2008 03:46 PM

OMG IT WAS HERE IN TORONTO?!:O OMG AND I LIVE NEAR TORONTO!!! OMG IM ANGRY I MISSED THE ONLY CHANCE OF SPORE I COULD HAVE PLAYED!!! >:( I hate myself-.- anyways I think its a good idea for buying new parts but it would be better if it was in an expansion. In an expansion they should put more parts the ability for an underwater creature or fly to another galaxy:)

Jon Ace - Mar 31, 2008 03:28 PM

So expected. Fucking greedy EA... -_-

Boba Fett - Mar 31, 2008 03:13 PM

While I hate the idea of purchasing creature parts, I don't really care too much. Doesn't this just mean that those who are too lazy/uncreative to make their own parts will have to pay to have stuff premade for them? I find that to be justified.

Manfesto - Mar 31, 2008 03:06 PM

Why can't they just add them new body parts for free? ^-^

Trent532 - Mar 31, 2008 02:44 PM

I don't like it as much as the next guy but I don't see where it will be presumeably $1-$2 per body part...that would be rediculous. I think it would be more like $1-$2 for a few body parts bundled together, like how you get bundle packs through the Xbox Live for game content.

xShuffle - Mar 31, 2008 02:41 PM

goodness, another addition to the growing greediness of EA. Dont they have enough money?

blue freak - Mar 31, 2008 02:19 PM

wouldnt it be better just to put the money into a card like xboxlive like 600 pionts on the card and u buy it for like six bucks and use the points to buy them. (:() just saying

viiGo - Mar 31, 2008 02:12 PM

Well this suckeds ,_,

xNo Name - Mar 31, 2008 01:34 PM

Fucking idiots, THE EXTRA PARTS ARE OPTIONAL! You DON'T have to buy them! IMO this is great, this means that after we get bored with the original parts we can simply buy new ones. I just hope that they aren't being complete assholes and will not be charging more than $1 each.

Salinator - Mar 31, 2008 01:31 PM

._. this is teh sucks X_X

xTerras - Mar 31, 2008 01:30 PM

Where does it say anything about the price being $1-$2 per part? im guessing they will sell them in packs and it wont cost much per part.

xTerras - Mar 31, 2008 01:27 PM

Option to buy extra parts sounds like a good thing to me. I dont see why everyone is complaining about this. Would you rather they just made the initial game and never added anything to it? Time = Money and it takes a lot of both to make more content.

ProudOne - Mar 31, 2008 01:21 PM

OH KOOL THEY CHARGE US for new parts!!!! How is that going to end >
