The Spore Supersite
Soon to come : Spore Profiles
Boom! Boom! Boom!

Several new articles were released since yesterday, when I posted a list of them, so here is an update:
First of all, Kotaku has a new video with creature editor scenes, Sporepedia/Sporecast information, and some... surprising creations. (note: The building editor is even more flexible than I hoped)
1UP has an article and a video interview with Will Wright, that will have a sequel, so stay tuned.
Patrick Buechner told ds fanboy that Europe indeed gets Spore earlier, at the 5th of September.
bit-tech also wrote a preview, with a suggestive line:
-"Each appendage and addition to your design gives them new advantages
and abilities that fit well with the reality. At basic levels this
translates to “Have wings, can fly”."
(Although maybe that was only a presumed example, and they didn't really try if this feature is possible.)
GameSpot posted a generic article too, maybe the most interesting part was this:
-"Spore has a very dry sense of humour, and it calls on you to collect
creatures for your own nefarious ends. However, there's a downside to
your scientific experimentation, and in our demo we managed to
introduce a rogue infection to our city by collecting bug-ridden
creatures. The result: You have to eradicate the surrounding colonies
with your onboard laser, using the left mouse button to fire."

u dont need a ufo to epic some thing just send it into mc donals
ShadowWolf - Feb 20, 2008 07:19 PM
I remember hearing that once you advance your UFO far enough you can "epic" a creature, which supersizes it. Then I guess you can let it lose on your enemies or something... that or have a re-match between Godzilla and King Kong...
serg24 - Feb 20, 2008 07:06 PM
i think i know why europe is getting early. it just that spore was made in america and europe is far and they ned to put the games nearly in every game store and start putting in the shelves. but that is what i think
Mr. Turtle - Feb 20, 2008 05:12 PM
what does the "epic" ending do? I heard that it makes you bigger or something...
austin - Feb 20, 2008 03:17 PM
i did see a fully animated flying creature in WW's GDC 2005 video. The vid's kinda old so i don't know if flying creautres are in or not. Here's the link to the video if you still haven't seen it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=T8dvMDFOFnA look at the upper right sky at 05:28 and you'll see some flying creatures.
Dr. Kilory - Feb 20, 2008 01:09 PM
mabye BestBuy doesn't want us knowing about that...hmm...conspiracy?
ShadowWolf - Feb 20, 2008 12:58 PM
isn't that interesting, dissapearing news posts... decide it wasn't important enough?
Manfesto - Feb 20, 2008 05:00 AM
Yay for 2 days earlier in Europe :D
nosporeinname - Feb 19, 2008 08:49 PM
@Rhaine-Yes, you did see that, it was on Hooked on Spore, another fansite. The reporter said something about tapping space to fly. But this does confirm flying. It is in. Limited, yes, but in. Also, someone mentioned planet editors: The video you probably saw was the one which had the developer planet editor, which will not be shipped with the game but *may* be shipped later. I think you can also find it on HoS.
Rhaine - Feb 19, 2008 08:33 PM
On the subject of flying: I cannot for the life of me remember where I saw this (might have been this site), but someone e-mailed the writers of that bit-tech article to ask if there really were flying creatures or not and they responded that yes, there are. The method was something like clicking the mouse to flap the wings.
InLoveWithSpore - Feb 19, 2008 07:43 PM
I know how you feel Masterman619, most people here have known about spore for atleast a year, being one of the original 2005ers myself i find it anoying that peaple can't wait two stinking days. As for the people complaining about the demo ruining the hype of spore id like to see how many of you actualy suport that statment and don't download the demo or buy spore? hmm anyone? (wow thats the first time i've ranted in ages)
Masterman619 - Feb 19, 2008 06:13 PM
it is so sad to, yet amusing, to see all these people complaining because it comes out over in europe 2 days earlier. there is something in me that just gets angry over the selfishness of the people on this forum.
pvt. ryan - Feb 19, 2008 05:47 PM
ww also said that going to the middle of the universe is the last goal of space stage and that our solar sistum is in every bodys universe
Mulligan11 - Feb 19, 2008 04:13 PM
@senselessrambler: It seems that your ufo IS the planet editor. All the tools for planet editing are in the ufo ui. I've never heard mention of a "Planet editor" in the same sense as the creature editor, but you can sculpt planets with your ufo. Also, the flora editor did not appear in the "open editor" screen in the kotaku video. I'm not going to assume it's "out," and hope that some editors have to be opened up by acheiving things in the game.
InLoveWithSpore - Feb 19, 2008 10:23 AM
oh i almost forgot the new anounced music editor
pvt. ryan - Feb 19, 2008 06:49 AM
i seen a video ages ago and it showed a ww makeing planets it didnt look like all the other editors but im not too sure oh and it wouldnt make a difference if europe gets it 2 days earlyer cus there will be a demo of the editors comeing out mounts before spore
InLoveWithSpore - Feb 18, 2008 08:37 PM
i don't think you can make a new planet but i know you can totally shape an already existant planet. so far all the editors i've heard of in order are cell editor, creature editor, hut editor, weapon editor, armor editor, building editor, vehicle editor, flora editor, U.F.O. editor, genetic editor (its a creature editor but you make NPC animals), and finaly planet editor. please tell me if i've left any off
senselessrambler101 - Feb 18, 2008 07:41 PM
I have a question, i know about creature editor, building editor, vechile editor, and recently flora editor. what i want to know is can i make planets? i dont know if any one knows or not because i havent seen it. but that would be the ulitmate editor. :D
Mulligan11 - Feb 18, 2008 03:33 PM
@ Turtle: simply put, how popular your creature will be will be based on how good you make it. You said yourself if someone does better, people will like it better. Being #1 because there's no #2 isn't so thrilling. So who cares if they get two days and 12 hours before the rest of us? They're in New Zealand. They're just going to make 1,000,000 different models of the Kiwi. :P
InLoveWithSpore - Feb 18, 2008 03:30 PM
Ok question, where have you seen flying whales speeder? and Austin "Take to flight" is just a phrase, it means he ran when he hatched rather than wait around to get eaten like his last creature
speeder7000 - Feb 18, 2008 02:25 PM
I think you can fly according to the article. FLYING WHALES!!!!!!
austin - Feb 18, 2008 01:28 AM
I think the bit-tech preview's creature can fly. He says so here: "Another Cardigan was hatching nearby, so I assumed control and immediately took to flight." Remember he said that he put wings on his Cardingan. Maybe that's why he said "Have wings, can fly". So Alterego made a mistake in saying that they didn't try this feature. That means flying creatures are IN!! ^_^
Dr. Kilory - Feb 17, 2008 10:17 PM
I can't view the video, when I go to the website, it is not there!
ShadowWolf - Feb 17, 2008 04:22 PM
I would hope that you could, I imagine my first few creatures aren't going to be that pretty. Although, erasing creatures after they have already been uploaded might be problematic if someone else had already used that content in their game...
Mr. Turtle - Feb 17, 2008 02:09 PM
Your probably right, but still skeptic about the demo downloading stuff. Though, I didn't consider that it would auto-download your creature. But would you be able to take off your creature if you made a stupid one by mistake?
ShadowWolf - Feb 17, 2008 11:32 AM
@Turtle: I'm pretty sure that the creatures being uploaded to the server will happen automatically, based on what I've seen. However, I think the game just puts up your creature with any really basic info, (carnivore, herbavore, stats, etc). While it is up to the user to get on the sporepedia site to add in the other things (tags, descriptions, etc.). While I am almost certain this is the same way the demo will work, I'm not sure if they will have the sporepedia up for players yet.
pvt. ryan - Feb 17, 2008 09:11 AM
i dont realy care bout relese date cus most people wouldnt be able to get it for first week or so cus it will be sold out i just hope we dont get a news shortage again
rankaratar - Feb 17, 2008 07:09 AM
Unless you had a time machine
Mr. Turtle - Feb 17, 2008 01:28 AM
Teh Guest: Let's just pretend that they will be released on the same day everywhere: If I create a good-looking creature and put it to their servers for others to download, then I may get people who request my creature. Then, someone creates an even greater version of the same basic idea for a creature as mine then everyone will download theirs instead of mine. Now, back to reality. Let's say that I create that same creature 2 days from when I originally would created it, then it would be too late and the other person would already have that better creature out there and I wouldn't get a single recognition. Do you see where I'm coming from here?
Mr. Turtle - Feb 17, 2008 01:28 AM
InLoveWithSpore: We should not assume that the creature editor demo, a few months from now, will let us upload our creatures onto their servers, a good guess, but so far they haven't shown us how we can put our creatures in their servers nor have they said that we will be able to do it with the demo. With EA, you should expect the worse for what they say (i.e. : "Spore release by end of 2006!" crap)
csquirrel - Feb 16, 2008 08:26 PM
sorry to harp on ;p But not only are Australians (and New Zealanders) up to +12 GMT but i believe they are getting the Euro release (NZ is, one of the benefits of acknowledging your British Colonial history ;P lol) So in the kotaku video there are those "feathers" (peacock & fernfeathers) and they look like aestheticly based with a bonus for jump and posture by the look of it, and a negative for sprint. (Are these what you guys are thinking of?) Doesn't look like they are wings though. I think if we saw them they'd be pretty obvious/big.
xTerras - Feb 16, 2008 03:47 PM
@ Teh Guest The part that she scrolls over is not a wing, its just feathers. She never goes near the wings which are at the bottom. I know this from the Gadgetoff video. If you look at our screenshot gallery and check the new creature editor pictures. If you see the finished creature with wings and the one before it got wings you'll see it receives an ability with 3 points when it gets the wings, not saying its flying for sure, could be sprint or jump.
Mulligan11 - Feb 16, 2008 12:41 PM
Ok, I have to comment on that... the 5th in Europe is not the same as the 7th in the US. If you really think that Europe is two days ahead of the US, then you're really, really confused about the shape of the planet. Europe is only a few hours ahead. Noon in London is the same as 7am in New York, but it's still the same day in both places.
spittle22 - Feb 16, 2008 12:13 PM
the game dose come out on the 5 but that is the same as the 7 in the usa...
Teh Guest - Feb 16, 2008 12:06 PM
Mr. turtle, I don't see your logic. First, hundreds of creatures have already been created, and that number will probably break a million by the release date. Second, I doubt highly that a lack of choices will make your creature popular, making a good creature will, which my take days of practice with the editor. Finally, no one outside of Europe will be downloading to their galaxy in those two days, so the first two days won't have an enormous effect on your popularity. Now can we please stop whining about how unfair it is that Europeans get to play the full game a whole two days before? I'm mad that australians get to play it a whole 19 hours before I do. We should put the international date line closer to New York. :p
InLoveWithSpore - Feb 16, 2008 11:19 AM
As most of you probably already know, there IS a creature editor demo coming out before the game, and it's pretty easy to guess their going to use it to populate their servers. So it really doesn't matter who gets the game first if you want to make the first creature. (im taking into account that the demo will probably come out the same time everywhere if the demo comes out early in Europe then this is pointless)
Mr. Turtle - Feb 16, 2008 06:46 AM
I want to get it at the same time as the people in Europe so that I can have my creatures be some of first created. For example: if I wanted to create little martians as a creature, then if someone requests that type of creature in their game, then mine would be one of the only choices. My creature would then be more popular compared to someone who came up with another model 2 days after mine.
sirnott - Feb 16, 2008 12:55 AM
Will always seems to make kick ass decisions lol...hence he has created a game that has the potential to make the best game list of all time. as for the Europe getting it 2 days earlier...who cares, its 2 days, and most of us have been waiting like...4 years for this? 2 days won't kill you

I think this whole argument about why Europe gets it two days earlier is silly, so I'm changing the subject to talk about the OTHER new info today. YOU CANNOT FLY! Despite the fact that at some point they said that they were taking flying out of the release version, the wings they very, very clearly highlight in the Kotaku video add to "Jump," "Sprint" and "Posture." No flying. Sorry. She actually holds the mouse over it for a few seconds, if you wanna watch yourself. I think maybe bittech just picked the wrong thing to say, not realizing how much we analyze everything that comes out. The death system, mentioned in the 1up interview sounds great. If you die in the creature phase, you just go back one generation, and if you lose the civ or tribal phase, you go back to the begninning of the phase, so you're not stuck in a losing position. Awesome. Good call, WW.

Relise date in europe is earlyer because 7 sep it falls on a Sunday. On sunday a lot of countrys in europe have close there shops on Sunday we used to have it hear in ireland but it gone now, CANT WAIT FOR SPORE!!?
Corvou - Feb 15, 2008 09:33 AM
Mopartex, I was going to point that, but this is so f*****g obvious that I could barely believe someone was sustaining the reason why Spore is geting early on europe based on that.
Papersock - Feb 15, 2008 02:44 AM
All this news is good and bad. It's bad because it makes it even harder for me to wait!
Mopartex - Feb 15, 2008 12:14 AM
Maybe I am missing something about the Europe thing. They get it on Sep 5 because in Europe Sep 7 is a Sunday. Isn't Sep 7 a Sunday for the whole world? Not saying they are not right... im just saying.... lol
csquirrel - Feb 14, 2008 09:03 PM
Europe is a bit of a "blanket" term. I'm in New Zealand and sometimes get Euro and sometimes get USA versions of games. On the New Zealand EA website the teaser has the European release date and I wondered if this would be accurate?
emilyt - Feb 14, 2008 07:51 PM
well they did say europe contained 60% of their customers... releasing it 2 days earlier allows europe to think they're "special" since europe usually gets games far later than the american and japanese releases
Corvou - Feb 14, 2008 07:43 PM
I think they're not releasing it in Europe first, I think they're releasing the multi-language Spore first, because it'll release 09/05/08 here at Brazil too.
Arayl - Feb 14, 2008 06:52 PM
Maybe they're releasing it in Europe first so that everyone else can have other people's creations populating their games rather than just having the creatures that are included on the disc.

I understand the region codes. Europe gets it later because of all of the translations needed for their region. I agree that it's unfair that they usually have to wait, but I just think it's ridiculous that instead of doing a worldwide release when there is no reason not to, you single out a region to get it a couple days beforehand. I dunno, I just think it's a stupid move; it won't affect anything it's just illogical and pointless to release the game in this way.

Gigify - Feb 14, 2008 02:52 PM
Why, exactly, would they release it two days sooner in Europe? That doesn't seem to make much sense, that just means that they're holding it back from the rest of us for no reason at all. What purpose would holding it back just so Europe gets it first serve except to piss people off? I know it's only two days and I'm not complaining about that, the only thing I'd complain about is that I'd have to AVOID THE DAMN INTERNET for two whole days because they made some poor choice. I mean the only other option would be to download a copy of the European version and play it early before buying it two days later, but that would just be ridiculous and unnecessary. I have a feeling that it will end up being a worldwide release anyway, since there is no purpose for them to hold it back from anyone at this point. No one should have to wait longer than anyone else because of the country they live in when we've already been waiting this long, even if it's just a few days it still makes no logical sense. I will be ashamed of EA if they decide to hold it from non-Europeans for no reason. :[
