I'm concerned the civilization mode might suck

I know it may be too early too tell, but from what I've seen, I'm concerned that the civilization mode might actually kind of suck. The fact that you seem to be able to place a limited number of walled lilly-pad like cities that have a specific function seems counter to what the rest of the game is about. I would have expected the civ phase to be more flexible and open-ended. Kind of like how you build cities in Black & White 2. You have a city center and then you place roads and buildings around it as needed - temples, armories, factories, residential, etc.

As a matter of fact, I'm starting to get concerned that 90% of the fun of Spore will be creating creatures and the remaining 10% will just be a sub-par version of Simcity/Populous/Black&White/Civilization.

I'm sure I'm wrong though. Will Wright hasn't been known to create a game that sucks.

I have put some thought into this too, and I think I agree. I'm afraid it's going to be like SimCity societies, like building useless eye-candy buildings where the game tells you to.

Though SCS is not a WW game. I still have my hopes that it will be more like an RTS rather than SCS.

I know what you mean.

Cities don't look like the ones in the civ phase, for a start they're too damn small! it's like a little fort or something that's meant to be the capital of your culture.

I intend to brush through that phase without bothering too much about it. It would be better if it was more like a real RTS style of play where you could place buildings and build wall rather than just be confined to a pre-defined circle.

just my thoughts.

I understand what your saying, it's very clear that Spore will either be a huge sucess or a complete disaster, but that's the risk run when making an origional game. However you have to remeber that Spore will hopefully be more than the sum of it's parts, taking many great god gaming elements such as populous, B&W2, etc and making a truly fantastic god game. So Spore should not be rated on one phase sucking more than annother, as thats bound to happen regardless.

I am worried about the civ phase, however I am staying optomistic, particualry following the news that the guy involved in the Civ games joined the Spore team last year. I am also looking forward to designing the buildings, planes, etc. Plus I don't think we have really seen the full extent of the Civ mode yet, as there has been no real news of its development recently.

Personally I don't really care about the 'lilly pad' style of the cities, as the areas that intrest me more is the diplomacy and military aspects of the stage, if I want to do large scale city designing as a god i'll just play B&W2. Plus I am looking forward to fighting Godzilla sized monsters with my armies as well as systematically conquering the other neigbouring citites, as long as they let me do that I'll be more than happy.

I beleive that the Civ phase will be pretty cool, i mean, massively interactive worldwide completly custom war/diplomacy/trade/religion simulation is SO COOL! And we all now that's only a PART of Spore.

Civ phase?

Well let's see, it's got:
Building editor
Vehicle editor
>Land Vehicles
>Planes
>Boats
Controlling your society regarding:
>Religion
>Society development (how your creatures will act when downloaded)
****Trade
****Deplomacy
****War
Different Cities of Your Creatures, as Developed Differently by the Computer

And from the videos I've seen, this phase is always mostly skipped/not allowed to be viewed extensively... that's got to hold something in terms of surprise.

Editted: because the INDENT tag doesn't seem to work.

The cities are not that small since when you are in a rts the vehicles are very important. If you have a massive base and not many units you most times will loose. Normally if you have a large army that is what wins the game. Also if the buildings do not really need my attention I can concentrate more on diplomacy tactics. Then I can have a huge army of boats and planes and subs and pay more attention to those. Having units I was able to make is what is interests me.

Since in RTS games you never get that. I would not mind though if the cities were big I can go either way with that. Also I think you desighn the lilly pad city base thing. So I would assume that you can have a large city base or a small city base and you choose a certain ammount of buildings anywhere from 1 to the maximum allowed. Also in a vid I seen that the centre main building of the city is what made the UFO. So that would tell me you would have one building for farming, One building for military units, One that serves as a living quarters for the creatures, and so on and so on. Since you pick what primarily you're civilisation will do depicts what buildings you can have. I do not think it is as detailed as civilisation or something. But remember in those games the city is based by a small little model like thing they don't show it in actual size.

Also I think the city is only part of the buildings you make. It may be where you desgihn the city and then later you build lesser buildings like farms and barracks and all that. It don't think that is is on the scale or empire earth or other rts. By that I don't think you may a complex city and base. I think it is a simplified version when it comes to that. But the units however are where the game should be as detailed as a RTS. Besides when ever does the first of a kind of game get it right 100% the first time? Of course spore will be missing some stuff you wish it had but I have yet to play a game where I could not think of something to add.

I seen a vid that sort of shows it but does not really show if you can make teh city as big as you want. The cities shown may be small just for the fact it was a presentation and the game is not done.

I can't remember if it was a video or a screenshot, but I remember seeing a planet just covered in chaos. Like, the entire planet was active with ships flying, cities everywhere, boats all up in the oceans.

I think it's gonna be great.

I never seen any thing that showed a planet covered in stuff like that.

You are right, this is a game about creating things! And this is why Spore will be awesome!

So... would you like to be forced to make hundreds (if not thousands) of buildings?
Even in the best RTS games, you play only with a few buildings because games are symbolic, you couldn't lead a real, whole civilization to victory in 1-2 hours (not even in RL years!!)

Err..
You can edit the buildings into virtually anything, including: medieval castles, Christmas themed city, Smurfville, a city of skyscrapers, etc, etc, or any other kind of weird alien colony, and you are whining about the inability to place the roads???
