From what I saw in the movies you actually evolve multiple times changing a little each time (using a points system), I think you move onto land if and when you add more "land walking stuff"(I have no idea what I'm just assuming) and to tribal stage when you upgrade your brain enough(which takes alot of points which is why you save them up over time) and I think thats the end of your species natural evolution(you can do more when you get the UFO).
